The Concept of Stress

It is 2am, and the thought of student loans has somehow crept into my subconsciousness and I wake up suddenly (yeah, fuck you Fasfa). I know that tomorrow I will be met with body aches as the stress of adulthood manifests its self. My body reacts to stress as a backache or sometimes a shoulder knot. I even started naming my body aches (fun right!!) I call the ache in my lower back grad school. That upper back knot? Undergrad. Pops up once a month when autopay withdraws a payment out of my account. Stress is bad #obvi because it makes your body more susceptible to injury. This is because of the reduction in blood flow to tense muscles. If you become injured, you are likely to be less productive because you will be focused on your discomfort rather than the task given to you. ( Pro tip: bosses like a productive millennial just FYI).  My point is that stress can play a big part in how your body feels and also has a great deal with how you will be at work.   So here are some helpful tips to help reduce stress in the workplace. ( WARNING: DO NOT QUIT YOUR JOB BECAUSE YOU HAVE BILLS TO PAY REMEBER! ) .

Tip 1: Try some physical activity! Because exercise releases endorphins- endorphins make people happy, happy people just don't go around killing their husbands. - That was a quote from Legally Blonde, if you didn't get it, that's fine let's move on. By now you are probably thinking " how am I supposed to exercise at work??"  Try to take some frequent breaks to get up and walk or even stretch. You can even suggest the ever-popular walking meeting. The movement will help increase blood flow which is good.

Tip 2: If your workload is too heavy try asking for help. I know, such a groundbreaking idea but listen,  you don't want to burn yourself out ( you're still young!!) If that is not an option, look out for opportunities for you to manage your time a little bit better. Not to say that you aren't already great at that, you're a millennial- I am sure you are great at everything! #whereismyparticipationtrophie.

Tip #3 Evaluate your workstation and make sure that you are properly set up.  When you feel confident with your workstation, you will likely feel more productive. Need help? Try my online ergonomic evaluation #shamelessplug. I would be happy to help out a fellow millennial.
