The Concept of Text Neck
Helloooo twenty and thirty-somethings! So listen, I know we get a lot of flak for being on our iPhones or androids, and we are tired of hearing about how we should put our phones down ( not going to happen), but there is something that we millennials are suffering from. I call it text neck. Have ya heard of it? It is actually called tech neck, but I like my name for it better. Text neck is when your head is tilted down so that you can stare at your phone ( usually while texting or Instagramming or whatever). It has been causing a lot of us neck/ shoulder discomfort.
This is the problem: Most people spend 2-4 hours on their cell phones per day, and it is typically done in a bad posture. But, we are not just "most people" WE ARE MILLENNIALS! So we can probably add an hour or two to that time. PLUS Your head normally weighs 10- 12 pounds ( 13 if you are me) when in a neutral posture. As you start to angle your head down to look at your phone, the weight can increase all the way up to 60 pounds on your neck!! That is like having a seven-year-old child sitting on your neck! As you could imagine that could do some serious damage to your neck. Continuous wear could eventually require an operation to correct the damage. So what's a millennial to do?! My answer is not going to be for us to limit our cell phone use. The best way to eliminate text neck is to keep your neck in a neutral posture. TA- DA! This will allow us to continue scrolling through Instragram feeds and Facebook posts with out hurting our precious necks! So keep your chin up my fellow millennial, your neck will thank you for it. If it helps you to tie it to something vein - putting your neck down often makes you look like you have a double chin. You're welcome.
