The Concept of Exercise Balls

Hi!  I am sorry to burst your bubble but, physioballs (aka exercise balls) are not a good substitution for an office chair. Here are six reasons why:
1.    While physioballs may look fun and give you childhood flashbacks of playing in ball pits, they pose a safety issue which is falling over. Everything is all fun and games until you spill coffee in your lap. #thatshot
2.    Studies conducted on exercise balls reported increased participant discomfort in the lower and upper back while sitting on an exercise ball doing office tasks compared to sitting in an office chair.
3.    Sitting on an exercise ball does not improve posture. Research has shown that you are just as likely to slump on an exercise ball as you are in an office chair.
4.    Balls deflate! You run the risk of sinking into the ball causing you to be in an awkward posture.
5.    You will not actually get abs from sitting on the exercise ball. In fact, sitting on an exercise ball will cause muscle fatigue.
6.    There is little impact on reducing body fat. On average, sitting on an exercise ball burns 4.1 calories per hour or 32 calories per day compared to sitting on a chair. This means that it would take 800 hours of sitting on an exercise ball to reduce body fat by just one pound. Life hack: Try to use a sit-stand desk to burn calories. Standing for 4 hours = 130 calories a day! #goals
